Casa vs Apoc essay plan
Over arching
. key argument of abstract vs nonabstract (techniques used) and link to production context of a move towards New Hollywood = more auteur freedom with interior meaning (auteur theory) + accompanied behind a change in national mindset which became clouded and uncertain, where artists like Coppola who went to film school + influenced by French new wave became more critical and experimental (link to post modern possibly) with the downfall of American exceptionalism andit's entailing disillusionment
. From Studio system to New Hollywood
. Reflected in: Influence from French Newwave
. Comparison ofopening scene: - highly choreographed camera movement in Casablanca + traditional three point lighting VS French new wave influence of overlapping editing + prolepsis
- Contextually: stubborn American isolationism despite global conflict around them (Rick in the bar and the move towards him as the camera tracks and we hear people talking about visas) VS fractured national image in globalist effort in Vietnam OR PTSD (either way disillusionment and trauma)
. CU on Willardsbed side table - initially pictures of wife , etc then 2nd bed side table on his other side has narcotics and alcohol (what he's stuck between or has transitioned to) VS CU of Ricks bar table (introducing character in a similar way , though contrastingly Willard is stuck between two environments, where Rick is stuck between Isolationism and Globalism - conflict basically being set up in the intro)
. Abstraction of opening - uncertainty of American national image VS clear structured opening of Casa - strong and certain national image (which comes undone but by the end of the filmis replaced by an equally strong and positive image) - production context; New Hollywood giving directors more control and artistic freedom allowing them to create there own interior meaning VS an interior meaning most likely dictated by the studio and the hays code
. Ending scene comparisons
. Apoc = intense inter splicing + intense music by the doors (sacrificial cow + Kurtz comparison) - contextually; could mean several things, purposefully abstract - disorientating, mostly in shadows + mist VS Casablanca clear and unabstracted ending with still structured choreography (production and contextual) and mostly 3 point lighting + but also uses mist but for production reasons whereas Coppola uses it for cinematic purpose (probably)

This looks to be a good plan, Louie. Based on your recent timed essay, the skill here now is to be able to write all this in the space of 50 minutes. It's a good idea to practise a few times (something we'll do in class) ... but you can also practise outside of class and hand in essays for marking.
