Knockout Ned turned killer

Mise en scene

Sound

Editing

In response to being emasculated by Benny and a girl that rejects him, Lil Ze emasculates the boyfriend of the girl twice; firstly by forcing him to strip in public humiliating him; then secondly raping his girlfriend and forcing Ned to watch. This is also in response to Benny leaving the slum with his girlfriend (Angelica), which Lil Ze resents, believing the girl is taking his only real friend Benny away from him. He is then in a sense exacting a revenge against Angelica and the woman that turned him down by emasculating her boyfriend and then later raping her.

. The camera is unsteady, the shots are fast, close ups are used = frantic, uneasy atmosphere to encouragement empathy with Ned
. Mid shots to also establish the very public environment and therefore emphasise how humiliating this experience is - Ned's relationship to the environment
. Long high angle shot + harsh spot light on Ned, like he's a circus act emphasising his humiliation - very harsh lighting almost bleaches the colour in the scene. The spot lighting also directs attention on Ned - further humiliation
. 1:17:54 track in onto Lil Ze (mid shot) - As he decides he's going to rape her after she emasculates him once again
. 1:18:18 - dramatic lighting shows Ze's ugliness and Ned's attractiveness
. 1:18:40 - Extreme close ups then fade to black - trauma of rape - the sound comes on and off with the fades to black, making it more shocking and impactful while also reflecting the semi conscious state of Ned as he lay on the floor powerless in this nightmare like scene
. Close up on Ned's traumatised face from a high angle with a shoe on it - also shows hi powerlessness - track back and tilt / rotation shot -
. Hyper real sound - muffled like Ned's after the gun shot
. out of focus close up - blurry silhouettes - handheld camera - camera focuses eventually on Ned's sobbing girlfriend - ultimately Ned's perspective (1:19:00)
. The apartment is dimly lit, with many figures sat in darkness - greyish colour palette
. Close up and pan to Ned's face, allowing the characters traumatic expression to take full effect
. Mid shot of the farther - away facing (body language) - chiaroscuro lighting
. Frantic handheld camera following the family's panic
. Medium shot - blue colour palette revealing Lil Ze's large imposing gang, from almost a POV shot with the handheld camera that slowly moves closer
. Once the shooting begins, shots last no longer than 2 seconds = frantic atmosphere (editing) with close ups and medium close ups to keep us trapped in the apartment - dramatic flashes of light from gunfire and exploding TV's + frantic sound from the relentless spitting guns tearing up the apartment shattering pots and smashing glass
. In a mid shot from behind, the farther unmoving is shot dead in his chair as he slumps signalling his death - this dark shot with minimal lighting is juxtaposed by the next shot which is harshly lit with frantic camera movement also juxtaposing the more static camera movement previously
. A low angle mid shot of the remaining family on the floor, huddling and grasping one another as debris falls on them (which looks like ash or something) - makes this scene feel almost like a natural disaster
. A cut to the gang outside then cut back into the apartment
. A series of mid close ups reveal more personal possessions to be destroyed, as figures are shattered and a picture of the mother and farther is shot at
. Cut back to the remaining family huddled on the floor, at a low angle revealing some of Ned's face

After the chaos:
. A low angle follows the mother as she begins to walk through the apartment before the camera veers off momentarily to reveal a counter of broken kitchen goods - out of focus - we return more so to the mothers perspective in a POV as we follow her eyes panning from her dead husband to the destruction below
. Next we take Ned's POV initially being blurry as the figure of his brother stands over his dead younger brother as she cries his name - we slowly move closer and the shot slowly goes into focus giving form to this violence
. A medium shot cements Ned's origin story - with Carrot handing him a gun in the foreground and to the bottom of the frame his mother crying hysterically with his brother trying to comfort her - ironic in that he inflicts similar grief onto others after he accepts this gun and becomes a hood - the very thing he despises
